I once asked James Hillman, it would have been in the Spring of 1990, whether or not the Eidola, the images he writes so convincingly about, were actually real.
He gave a good chuckle and said not in the material sense but real none the less.
Who is to say what this dream means to you but what I can say is that the images which our mind creates or receives (take your pick) move or push or drive reality.
When such a visitation comes, and the images wander across liminal space (the perception boundaries we generate through our habit responses) they can startle us.
Truth is, images are roaming around all the time, be we awake or asleep.
